Wanhoop in Amerika ….. Waar is the American dream?

Een wanhopige burgemeester van Louisiana, Ray Nagin, in een interview dat geschiedenis zal maken….

Een stukje van bovenstaand interview getranscribeerd:

Interviewer: You and I must be a minority cause apparently there’s a section of our citizens way out there that thinks  because  of a law that says the federal government can’t come in unless requested by the proper people that everything that has been going on up to this point  has been done as good as it can possibly be

Nagan: Really?

Interviewer/ I know you don’t feel that way…

Nagan: well

Interviewer: Did the tsunami people request? Did you go through a formal process to request? Did the Iraki people request that we go in there? Did they ask us to go in there? What is more important, you know I’ll tell you man, I’ll probably get into a whole bunch of trouble, I’ll probably get into so much trouble they won’t know what they’ll do with me after this interview is over…

Interviewer: You and I will be in the funny place together…

Nagan: But…we authorize 8 billion dollars to go to Irak, look at this quick, after 9/11 we gave the president unprecedented powers, look at these quick to take care of NY and other places, now you needn’t tell me that a place most of you all is coming to, a place that is so unique when you mention New Orleans anywhere in the world anybody’s eyes light up… You needn’t tell me that a place where probably have  thousands of people that have died and thousands more that are dying every day, that we can’t fgure out a way to authorize the resources that we need? Come on, man…

You know I’m not one of those drugaddicts, I’m thinking very clearly and I don’t know whose problem it is, I don’t know whether it’s the governor’s problem, I don’t know whether it’s the president’s  problem but somebody needs to get the ass on a (…?) and sit down, the two of them, and figure this out, right now…

Interviewer: What can we do here?

Nagan: Keep talking about it…

Interviewer: We’ll do that… What else can we do

Nagan: Organize people to make them write letters, make calls to the congressmen, to the president, to the governor, Ask them to do something, this is ridiculous… I don’t want to see anybody do anymore pressconferences, put a moratorium on pressconferences. We won’t do another pressconference until the resources are in this city and they come down to this city and stay with us when there are  military trucks and troups that we can’t even count, don’t tell me 40.000 people are coming in… THEY’RE NOT HERE…

(….)

Interviewer: (…) I bet that the people listening to you are on your side…

Nagan: Well I hope so, God,  I’m at the point it don’t matter. People are dying, they don’t have homes, they don’t have jobs, the city of New Orleans will never be the same
